It almost looked as if the 47th edition of the traditional horn sled race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen would have to be canceled, but thanks to the combined efforts of the Partenkirchen Horn Sled Association and the municipality of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the event was able to take place as planned on January 6, 2016.
“We brought the snow up, then it flew away again. Then we drove it up again,” said Peter Strodl, the first chairman of the Partenkirchen horn sledge association, describing the effort involved.
67 sledges, each with four riders, took to the shortened track and offered the 6,000 spectators a spectacular race in fantastic weather.
In order to provide great entertainment for young visitors and future horn sledders, there was a mini bob (zipflbob) race on the finishing slope during the two race breaks. The winner was the first to complete the finish jump.
The races were divided into a group of 6-11 year olds and a group of 12-16 year olds. Due to the great enthusiasm and the many registrations, the groups were divided again and started in 2 heats. In the end, 4 lucky winners were delighted with the main prize and each received an original mini bob.
A great event like every year! A big thank you to the Hornschlittenverein Partenkirchen.
