Last Thursday, extreme mountaineer Pavlek Levpist (32) from Briga, Slovenia, successfully descended Mount Everest on a zipflbob. The trained carpenter and mountain guide is the first person ever to toboggan down the highest mountain in the world.
Pavlek Levpist was accompanied on his descent by his younger brother Viktor (29) on skis and partially secured. Due to deteriorating weather conditions, the brothers were unable to start their descent from the highest point of the summit. Both set off just below the so-called Hillary Step at 8760 meters and reached the advanced base camp (ABC) at 6400 meters via the southern route “Lirpa 1” after around 9 hours.
Pavlek Levpist had already made similar attempts on Mont Blanc in France and Annapurna in the Himalayas in previous years, but always had to abandon the runs prematurely. On those expeditions, the descent was also carried out using a Teflon-coated zipflbob, but the bobsleigh had not been modified in any way.
According to reports, the Levpist brothers came up with the idea of descending extremely high mountains alone with a zipflbob during an argument about the sense and nonsense of ever more extreme alpine records.
Viktor Levpist captured his brother’s descent on a zipflbob with a handheld camera. The film will be released exclusively on www.outdooractive.com in the next few days.
